This is a project that I've been meaning to get to for a couple of years now. I have plenty of training bumpers, but have wanted to have a supply of winter dummies. Canvas ones are expensive to buy but an old friend of mine gave me a prototype that he built roughly 30 years ago. I've used that bumper every winter and this year I decided to take it apart and rebuild it.
It had to be lightweight, as to not sink in the snow, and soft (safe for the dog) and dark, to contrast the sky and snow. The supplies were cheap but the skills to master my wife's sewing machine had to be learned. It didn't take long, but I had about a dozen made in just a couple of -15 degree days! The fabric and foam are much more durable than the original, which kind of surprised me. The doggies approve and the bumpers are holding up well. After a couple of more days we'll have another dozen and we will be ready for winter training.....just as soon as hunting season wraps up!
